Canberra and Region
Yes! That's right Canberra is the Capital of Australia. I know what your thinking, "What about Sydney or Melbourne?" In fact, to solve the argument between the two in 1906 a new location was decided on to be the National Capital and a completion was launched to design the city. So, in 1913 a guy named Walter Burley- Griffen developed the winning design and Canberra was born.
Today, as a result of its design and history, Canberra is a unique city: The bush capital of Australia, just two hours drive from the snowfields of the Snowy Mountains and two hours from the surf on the beautiful New South Wales Coast. Canberra boasts the National Museum of Australia, National Gallery, and Library, as well as stunning parks and bush walks all year round. (Am I selling this to you yet?) Every weekend there is a different event to go to either hosted by the International Embassies' located here, or one of the various societies, sports or cultural groups. If you just want to chill out, the increasingly popular and varied café scene may be your thing. If it's shopping or movies that you're after then within a twenty minute drive of the YWAM Base there are five malls, four of which have multiplex cinemas where you can lose yourself. If you're into Sport, Canberra is the home of the National Institute of Sport where many of Australia's Olympic Athletes train. There are also world class facilities for most sports including swimming, mountain biking, golf and many more. If you're just into watching other people running around then Canberra is the home of several teams from various sports who compete on the National scene. ![]()
